Congratulations, you and your club have made it over the hump of the dog days of summer. All of the hard work from last fall and this spring laid the groundwork to maintain optimal playing conditions throughout the summer along with diligent management and long hours. Great, this is what you were trained for and hired to do. The golf course looks fantastic and is playing superbly. What about you?
Have you been taking care of yourself lately? What does that even mean? It probably has slightly different meanings for everyone so broadly speaking it means are you making time for your physical, mental, and social health. Each one of these categories deserves a thorough review and will be addressed through future postings.
It is very easy this time of year to put your well-being on hold i.e. “I’ll get to that after Labor Day”, “I’ll schedule that doctor’s appointment after aerification”, “I’ll schedule that dentist appointment in the winter”, “I’ll get back to a workout routine after the Holidays” etc… “where did the winter go.” So many superintendents make the golf course priority one and take care of themselves when they can. But as most of us know deep down if we don’t plan for it or make it a habit it probably won’t happen until there is some type of warning sign or crisis.
Sometimes in this business the best thing to do on the golf course when faced with turfgrass stress in the summer is nothing, just keep an even keel. That is not the best course of action when it comes to your well-being. Don’t wait. Start small. Whether it is drinking more water, eating slightly better, starting a moderate exercise program, making those doctor or dentist appointments, exploring various meditation methods, picking up a new hobby, making a little more time for friends and family or whatever you think may be lacking at the moment, just take the first step toward improving your well-being today. It will be good for you and ultimately your golf course.
